BUILDING A BOND WITH YOUR SURROGATE; TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND SUPPORT

WHAT IS SURROGACY

The term "surrogacy" refers to situations in which infertile couples depend on a third-party lady to bear their kid on their behalf. Put simply, it is a contract wherein a lady becomes pregnant "for" another couple. Many infertile couples contact India, where commercial surrogacy is permitted, from all over the world. Surrogacy is a significant reproductive treatment. With the development of in vitro fertilization (IVF), women with serious medical issues and uterine defects that impede pregnancy and those without a uterus can now become mothers. With additional pregnancy-related restrictions, to become mothers using their own or a donor's embryo placed into the uterus of a gestational carrier. Gay couples and single men can now become fathers by using this technology to generate embryos using their sperm and donor oocytes. The Latin verb "Subrogare" (to substitute) means "appointed to act in the place of," and this is where the word "surrogate" originates.

In 1980, surrogacy was first made available. And was made legal in India in 2002. As the year went on, however, the GOI discovered certain shortcomings and abuses of commercial surgery. In response, the ICMR implemented several rules designed to stop the abuse of surrogacy. The law underwent several revisions as time went on. While it seems that everyone will benefit from this arrangement, some sensitive concerns need to be addressed through appropriately crafted legislation to protect the rights of both the intended parents and the surrogate mother. This article aids and guides you on appropriate communication techniques to help you develop a healthy relationship with your surrogate.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO BUILD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SURROGATE

The practice of surrogacy was first made public in 1980. and were authorized in India in 2002. However, as the year went on, the GOI became aware of certain shortcomings and improper use of commercial surgery. In response, the ICMR established some rules to stop the abuse of surrogacy. Several changes were made to the bill as time went on. All parties involved in this arrangement seem to benefit from it, but to safeguard the rights of the intended parents and the surrogate mother, a few sensitive concerns need to be addressed by properly crafted legislation. This article provides guidance and help on how to communicate effectively with your surrogate to establish a solid rapport. It is an exciting, hopeful, and eagerly anticipated procedure to becoming a parent through surrogacy. Thus, developing a close relationship with their surrogate is not only beneficial but also required for intended parents; yet, it is crucial to have a positive rapport with the surrogates, which comprises,

  • Mutual trust and respect
  • Emotional support and connection
  • Open communication
  • Smooth transition post-birth
  • Inclusive decision making
  • Better wellbeing of children
  • Legal and ethical considerations

TIPS TO BUILD BOND WITH YOUR SURROGATES

1. OPEN AND HONEST COMMUNICATION:

The cornerstone of building a solid rapport with your surrogate is open and honest communication. Express your feelings over the surrogacy and the circumstances honestly. You do not have to skirt the outrageous. When discussing surrogacy expenses, requests for proposals, or business ventures, candid communication is essential.

Make sure that neither party feels uncomfortable raising any issues throughout the surrogacy trip by checking in with each other regularly. Building trust and strengthening your relationship can be achieved through encouraging open communication. Intended parents should be upfront and honest about their needs and possibilities from the start of the process. Communicate openly with your surrogate regarding your hopes. How often will you be in contact with them?

The degree of participation in the pregnancy

Intended parents must remain receptive to input from their surrogates. However, if the surrogate has concerns or requests, you need to listen to them and collaborate to find a solution.

2. RESPECTING BOUNDARIES:

In any relationship, there are limits. Considering the great commitment that gestational surrogates make by carrying a child for someone else, it is likely that they have preferences regarding the kind of engagement that they would like to receive from the intended parents. Avoiding taking on obligations you cannot fulfill is crucial. Sometimes, because they are too engrossed in the "honeymoon phase," intended parents mistakenly reveal information or make commitments they later regret. It is essential to go gently, be kind and sincere, and set boundaries if you want to form a surrogate relationship that is healthy and durable.

3. EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:

There are often emotional ups and downs throughout pregnancy. Gestational surrogates may experience a range of emotions during the procedure. As intended parents, you can offer your surrogate emotional support when needed by listening to her and confirming her feelings. Realize that your surrogate may experience a range of emotions, such as bonding, hormonal changes, and intermittent challenges. Offer a listening ear and validate her feelings and experiences. Show empathy and understanding, and when needed, offer support and encouragement. By providing emotional support, you can create a supportive environment for your surrogate.

4. SHOW APPRECIATION:

Try to acknowledge the incredible role your surrogate is playing in your family's growth and give her a sense of recognition and gratitude. Without her, none of this would be possible. Express your gratitude with heartfelt deeds, little gifts, or heartfelt letters. Ascertain that your surrogate is aware of your gratitude for her dedication and kindness.

5. PROVIDE SUPPORT DURING MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS:

Your involvement in the surrogacy process shows how committed and supportive you are of your surrogate. Attend physical examinations, ultrasounds, and other important life events whenever you can. A culture of respect and understanding among people is promoted by setting and maintaining these boundaries.

6. PRIORITIZING HER PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH:

Given the amount of effort she is putting in, you must support your gestational surrogate in maintaining her health and taking care of herself without putting unnecessary pressure on her or passing judgment. Respect her efforts to exercise, maintain a healthy diet, and get adequate sleep.

7. REGULAR CHECK-INS AND UPDATES:

Throughout the surrogacy process, establish a regular communication schedule and stay in touch. Updates regarding the pregnancy, noteworthy occurrences, and decisions made should be given. Show her that you truly care about her life and well-being by having conversations with her on topics other than the surrogacy procedure. Maintaining a regular contact schedule strengthens the bond and promotes trust and friendship.
