CLOMID, the World’s Oldest Fertility Drug!

Chemically known as Clomiphene Citrate, CLOMID is the oldest fertility drug in the world it has been around since the 1960s Its track record for safety and efficiency in helping women achieve positive results with regards to conception makes it the first-line treatment for women who are facing infertility issues.

If you are just about to begin treatment for fertility and the doctor may have suggested Clomid, here are a few interesting facts that you should know about this drug.

Oral Fertility Medication

There are two kinds of medications that the doctor may prescribe, fertility medications could either be injectables or oral. Clomid falls under the second category, it’s a pill that needs to be swallowed with water. Once dissolved and digested by your body, it stimulates the body to start ovulating gently, making the body produce more than just one egg, but not a battery of eggs as injectables would do.

Estrogen Production is blocked

While it blocks the production of Estrogen, the active ingredient in Clomid, Clomiphene Citrate works towards stimulating the hypothalamus and pituitary glands to produce GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), and LH (luteinizing hormone).

These three hormones work together in pushing the body to release at least one egg if not more, thus improving the chance of it being fertilized by a sperm.

PCOS

Clomid serves as the ideal medication for women suffering from PCOS. It is definitely better than injectables. Hormonal imbalances and metabolic processes tend to hinder the process of ovulation.

Women suffering from PCOS tend to have a bank of immature eggs that are ready to be released. In case your PCOS is undiagnosed and you do undertake injectable medication, you could release too many eggs and will be at risk of conceiving multiples.

Mild Symptoms

When being treated with Clomid you may experience mild side effects, similar to those that you experience with early pregnancy or PMS. Side effects with injectables are a little more dramatic.

Side effects with Clomid may include: Headaches, cramping, mild bloating, or abdominal tenderness and blurred version (rare).

Since Clomid is being used successfully since 1967, there are more than 50 years of data available to validate its success rates. Women who are treated with Clomid have 80% higher chances of ovulating, which leads to a 10-15% chance of conceiving with every cycle undertaken. Clomid is often prescribed in cases of male infertility too, so when the man’s sperm count is less, more eggs in the fallopian tube could help with conception.

Get in touch with us to know more about how minimal stimulation can help you achieve great results. In case you are planning a baby, and are having trouble conceiving naturally, let us dig deeper, Clomid is what we may prescribe first too.
